A human rights organisation, Human Rights Agenda (HURIA) is perturbed by the soaring of sexual violence cases in Kwale county.
The rights lobby says recent cases of sodomy have been reported in Ukunda areas where young boys are being lured by their close relatives and sodomised, and the perpetrators vanish without any arrests.
According to HURIA Public Complainst Officer Mwinyihaji Chamosi, the disturbing trend may get out of hand if no concerted efforts to tame such ugly incidents.
Speaking in Kibundani area, Ukunda Ward, Msambweni Sub county where a close relative sodomised a 20-year-old young man who is mentally unfit on January 8, this year, Chamosi said despite all efforts to ensure the culprit is nabbed and lawfully punished, police are yet to make any arrest.
“Together with the family, we reported the incident at Diani police station after a medical examination at Diani dispensary confirmed that indeed the survivor was sodomised several times and for a long time by his very close relative,” revealed Mr Chamosi.
He appealed to Diani Police to do whatever it takes to arrest the suspect so as to end sexual violence in Ukunda and the larger Kwale county.
“The suspect remains scot free, we appeal to the police officers in charge of Diani police station to ensure he is arrested and arraigned in court,” noted Chamosi.
A similar incident was witnessed February last year at Mwananyahi area within Matuga Sub county where another boy was sodomised for long by three close relatives until he openend up to a local religious leader for help. However, the offender vanished, living the victim with both physical and psychological suffering.
The HURIA Public complaints officer assured the family of the survivor that the lobby will work closely with security agencies to ensure that all those involved are arrested and punished.
He also warned families in the vast Kwale county against solving such heinous crimes in a family set-up, noting that such poor practices have for years denied the victims justice.
“We will relentlessly follow up on these two disturbing cases until all those involved are nabbed and lawfully punished, we also appeal to the communities around to join these efforts of ending sexual violence in Kwale county and the entire Coast region,” reiterated Mr Chamosi.
