In a bid to curtail early pregnancies among school going children in Taru area within Kinango, Kwale County, a community organisation has been engaging locals to openly discussing the social vice.

Sports Connect Foundation (SCF) that initiated efforts of involving girls in sports activities to dissuade them from social vices that may plunge them into irresponsible sexual behaviours, says the efforts are yielding fruits.

According to Sports Connect Foundation Patron Athanas Mdoe Tangai, the organisation ventured into meeting local communities at their rural homes, educating them about the importance of taking their children to school, efforts that have positively impacted the communities in the larger Taru area.

“We are not only focusing on education but also the social well-being of the communities, health and youth and women empowerment. We are striving to bring transformative change among our communities,” noted the activist.

Parenting

Mr Mdoe further disclosed that the forums being conducted in Egu village within Taru have enabled parents to seriously perform their parenting roles and ensure their children are in school.

“There is no way we can successfully battle early pregnancies and other social vices apart from working in unison with the local communities, setting our objectives straight and aim at achieving such goals,” he added.

Mdoe, urged parents within Taru to embrace proper parenting, closely monitor their children whether under their vicinity or away in school by having close contact with their teachers.

He further warned that any person who lures underage girls into sex or impregnates them should face the full wrath of the law.

His sentiments were equally shared by Egu village Gender activist, Nancy Gome who said such continuous engagements at the very grassroots level have positively impacted the fight against early pregnancies in Egu area, within Taru, Kinango Sub county.

Nancy noted that the fight should involve the entire community, further warning that no crime such as sexual assault or defilement will be handled in a family setup, but culprits should be lawfully punished.

“We are not here to sanitise those who have decided to make the lives of our young girls unbearable. Let the law take its course and anyone who will be involved in sexually intercourse with a minor should not be spared but face the law,” reiterated Ms Gome.

The grassroots awareness campaign on education, health and community empowerment forums spearheaded by Sports Connect Foundation are ongoing, according to the organisations’ Patron, Athanas Mdoe Tangai.
