Likoni Walk Movement gains momentum, focuses on community development

It started as a simple group of people excercising randomly in the morning within Likoni vicinity.

Later the efforts escalated to a more well-organised group that followed the systems and styles of Mombasa Walk Movement and finally, Likoni Walk Movement was hatched under the stewardship of Mwinyihaji Chamosi.

Likoni Walk Movement, now with a strong membership that keeps on growing is not only focusing on just walking and making fit, but involve health experts who engage members in health issues, mental health challenges and how to overcome them among a range of community activities.

Speaking recently during a walk exercise conducted in Likoni, Mombasa, the Founder and Likoni Movement Chairperson, Mwinyihaji Chamosi said with it’s vast membership, community matters remains top priority for the dedicated team.

“We have some experts like Engineer Musa Chiyama who has vast knowledge on security issues and recently, he led the team in creating awareness to the Likoni community on security matters,” said Mr Chamosi.

The community activist who is also Human Rights Agenda (HURIA) Public Complaints Officer said Mombasa Walk Movement is designed to, apart from engaging the community on health matters and keeping fit, it also dialogue with the community on security, development, education, women and youth empowerment among other range of community development activities.

According to Chamosi, LWM has been an eye opener to not only the members but the entire Likoni community.

“In our recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) where we discussed about our challenges, achievements, financial statements among other developmental agenda, we also recognised our dedicated members and we actually issued them with certificates,” said Chamosi.

Bofu Ward MCA Juma Manuary, Zainab Karoyo, Ali Kilato, Kassim Mwakutema, Khadija Amir, Said Khalid and Hassan Nondo are among members who were recognised for their efforts in keeping physically fit.

The Likoni Community Movement Committee involving Rama Cruza, Mkasi Veso, Ali Sasabu, Bakari Mwatayari among others have urged Likoni dwellers to join the movement so that apart from maintaining their wellbeing health-wise, they also participate in various community engagement and development activities.
