Lamu East MP Captain Ruweida Obbo has defended her move to back the Finance Bill, 2024, saying it will facilitate developments in the country and more specifically in Lamu County.
Capt. Ruweida said her Lamu East Constituency has for years experienced high levels of poverty, poor road networks among other basic amenities.
She said Lamu East Constituency lacks proper educational infrastructure, no fresh water and locals have only been depending on rain water for drinking and many other uses.
“For the last 61 years since independence as Lamu East residents we have seen no electricity. These are some of the reasons why I voted Yes for the Finance Bill, 2024,” she said.
She criticised other coastal leaders who have been tearing her apart following her stance on the Finance Bill.
“This is my constitutional right and the Lamu East problems are better known by ourselves and not any other person from other coastal counties other parts of the country,” noted the Lawmaker.
The Lamu East MP reiterated that when passed, the Finance Bill will enable President William Ruto transform this country and better the lives of all Kenyans.
“Coming Tuesday, I will vote Yes during the final reading and voting in Parliament because I know the benefits of this particular bill. You may say what you want to say, however, that will not change my mind,” she further stated.
The Legislature was recently ejected from the Coast leaders meeting held at the Kenya School of Government (KSG) on Friday last week after she clearly stated her stand on the Finance Bill that did not go down well with other Coast MPs.
Ms Ruweida stated the importance of Finance Bill 2024, which led to her booing from other leaders. She however said she would never change her stand come Tuesday when MPs will vote for or against it.
The Lamu East MP sentiments comes amid a heated debate and protests against the Finance Bill spearhead by the youthful generation now famously known as Generation Z.
Already the protests have claimed two lives, that of 29-year old Rex Masai and Evans Kiratu both shot by police during Thursday’s June, 20 protests in Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi.
The youth have vowed to soldier on with their protests early Monday until the President listens to them.
