Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir broke his silence on the accusations linking him and his family to the abduction and sodomy of a Mombasa-based blogger, Bruce John Kajira.

Speaking for the first time during a press briefing held at his office in Mombasa, the Mombasa county Chief said he was “hurt” by the accusations, terming it a very trying moment for him and his family.

The emotional Governor said he has never, in his life, meted any violence on anyone. His policy, he said, is never mentioning anyone in political or any other podia.

“It’s shocking that it is deemed that myself and 74-year-old mother would be part and parcel of this heinous act of this magnitude,” Nassir said.

He noted that power is transient and it has never gotten to his head.

“I want to give my version. I have tried to hold this for so long,” he said.

The governor said when the viral video of the blogger insulting him and his family started circulating, the first thing he did was speak to his family and agreed to leave it to the Almighty.

“It is unfortunate that such a scenario is now being used for political purposes,” Nassir said.

The presser came a few moments after detectives on Monday failed to charge Mombasa County Lands Executive Mohammed Hussein, popularly known as Amadoh after his lawyers produced High Court orders barring his arrest and prosecution.

Flanked by Jomvu MP Badi Twalib, his Mvita counterpart Mohamed Machele, and a host of county officials, including Amadoh himself and his lawyers, Nassir said he is truly hurt for not any other reason but for his mother being dragged into the whole issue.

Amadoh

According to police sources, Amadoh had been summoned to appear before the DCI on Monday morning.

His arrest on Sunday caught him, his junior officers, colleagues and the Governor’s office unaware.

Amadoh was arrested at a popular restaurant where he had gone for coffee on Sunday evening and was held till the next day.

He was supposed to be charged in relation to the alleged blogger’s assault.

“My CEC was arrested and released for no other reason except for the fact that he has been with me through my political journey,” the governor said.

He claimed his mother’s house had been broken into twice since the incident, adding: “As much as I feel sorry for whatever happened to this young man, the spirit of my family will not only forgive and forget but let the almighty.”

CCTV footage was provided to the detectives, he noted.

He said his mother had been summoned by police for no good reason.

The young man, had sent him over 800 messages over a long period, but he never responded to any, he noted.

The doctor in charge at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital received a call from a senior politician, who threatened him to write a report in a certain way, Nassir said.

“This country has a history of people being coerced and coached to say things,” he said, adding that even President William Ruto underwent the same at the Hague.

“I hope police will get to the bottom of this thing,” he said.

Nassir said he has gone through worse.

“I have every intention of clearing my name and ensuring those behind this form of malignment are equally brought to book,” Nassir said.

Four people have so far been arraigned over the incident.
