In a landmark move to enhance emergency healthcare services, Mombasa Governor H.E. Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir officially inaugurated the newly renovated Emergency Department (ED) at the Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital (CGTRH). The revamp, undertaken as part of the “Adopt-an-ED” initiative, seeks to modernize and standardize public emergency facilities across Kenya.

Modernizing Emergency Care

The extensive renovation project from September 2, 2024, to February 18, 2025, was implemented in collaboration with the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation (EMKF). The overhaul focused on infrastructure improvements, upgraded medical equipment, and streamlined workflows to enhance patient care and efficiency.

The key enhancements include:

Upgraded Infrastructure: The ED now features an improved patient flow design, upgraded flooring and ceilings, and enhanced privacy through modern partitioning. Structural modifications have been made to support efficient service delivery.

State-of-the-Art Facilities: The department is now equipped with 21 bedheads integrated with oxygen outlets, suction, and power sources. Additional upgrades include new sanitary fittings, LED lighting, and improved ventilation systems.

Optimized Workspaces: The redesigned layout includes expanded observation and resuscitation areas, a dedicated isolation room, refurbished nurse stations, and a new staff lounge.

Advanced Medical Equipment: The ED now boasts 15 cardiac monitors, four vital sign monitors, 21 modern patient stretchers, and a medical refrigerator, among other essential resources.

A Step Towards Better Healthcare

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Nassir expressed his appreciation to EMKF for their partnership, emphasizing the significance of collaboration in advancing healthcare standards. “The transformation of CGTRH’s Emergency Department underscores the power of strategic partnerships in delivering quality healthcare services. This is a major step forward in ensuring that Mombasa residents receive efficient and timely emergency care,” he remarked.

The newly upgraded facility is expected to:

Expand patient capacity and improve emergency response efficiency.

Enhance service delivery and overall patient outcomes.

Set a benchmark for emergency healthcare in the region.

CGTRH now joins a growing list of hospitals benefiting from the “Adopt-an-ED” initiative, with similar projects completed in Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Migori, and Bungoma, and ongoing renovations in Kwale, Embu, and Baringo.

Future Plans

Governor Nassir reiterated his administration’s commitment to replicating the success of this initiative across other healthcare facilities in Mombasa. The county aims to develop a sustainable emergency care system that can serve as a model for other regions in Kenya.

Present at the launch were EMKF’s Director of Programs, Emily Nyagaki, and Programs Manager, Lilian Waihuini, who lauded the Mombasa County Government for its commitment to healthcare development.

As the event concluded, Governor Nassir reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening healthcare services, ensuring that all Mombasa residents have access to high-quality, lifesaving emergency care.
