Voices of Community Activists and Leaders of Africa (Vocal Africa) Executive Director, Hussein Khalid has appealed to President William Ruto to stop the blame game and act on the very clear demands from the youthful generation famously known as Gen-Z

According to Khalid the protests which began on June, 18, 2024 may last longer if the President continues ignoring them instead of implementing the demands raised.

The renowned activist noted that the Gen-Z raised critical issues since the demands of thrashing the Finance Bill, 2024, which was entirely dropped, however, Khalid says the youth are agitating for proper governance, taming graft in the country and a sober discussion about ethics and integrity aspects in leadership.

The Vocal Africa Head rubbished the recent president’s sentiments that the ongoing Generation Zero demos are funded by an American humanitarian organisation, Ford Foundation.

“Why is it so hard for the President and other politicians to believe that Gen-Z are a woke and fearless generation? They don’t need to be told what to do or be funded by anyone. They just want a bright future for Kenya. Full stop. Is that so hard to believe?” posed Mr Khalid.

The activist noted that Kenya Kwanza government promised Kenyans and more specific the youth how it will improve their lives, offer them jobs and make them hopeful and successful generation, however, two years later the youth have remained hopeless without anyone to hold on to.

“The debate of reconciliation should be between the President and the youthful generation and this is not about only talks but listening and act on the demands raised by the Gen-Z,” said Khalid.

He added that blaming civil society and activists that they are being funded to cause anarchy and distabilise the country amounts to reckless, baseless and false remarks from the Head of state.

“We have all seen what the Kenyan youth want. Employment opportunities, life they can afford in their own country, affordable higher education and lower taxes among a range of demands. All these demands want the president’s action, please stop blaming us for your predicaments,” the activist told the president.

Meanwhile, through a statement the Ford Foundation denied funding the ongoing protests and reiterated that it only work with the civil societies to strengthen civic education in matters governance at the grassroot level.

Demands

Faces of renowned activists were nowhere during the Tuesday, 16, 2024 protests which took place in major towns in Mombasa including Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kisii, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu among many other counties in the country.

The youth have vowed to relentlessly push for the resignation of President William Ruto claiming he has failed in taking the country to better levels.

The youth said that their lives and that of their parents have become miserable with the high taxation, joblessness, high cost of living, nepotism and discrimination in employment opportunities in government parastatals.

The youth rubbished the call for National dialogue saying President Ruto does not need dialogue to fight corruption in his government, neither does he need dialogue to tell Kenyans the exact debt we owe our lenders.

The Gen-Z have as well thrashed the plans by President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga intended unity in steering the nation, the youth openly claiming that the Opposition leader is an opportunistic and does not represent them.
