
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya for allegedly embezzling county funds.
Governor Natembeya Lawyer, Ndegwa Njiri, says the governor presented himself at the EACC headquarters in Nairobi on Monday May 19th to record statement.
He was locked in and his legal team denied access.
“They have locked in our client, but we are not able to access him or give him any legal counsel on the process that is currently being undertaken,” Njiru stated.
EACC says it is investigating allegations of procurement irregularities, abuse of office and bribery, Linking the arrest to alleged fraudulent acquisition of Ksh.1.4 billion.
The alleged irregularities are believed to have occurred in the 2022/2023 to 2024/2025 Financial Years.
EACC says that the incidents relate to three major county projects, among them the rehabilitation of Kenyatta Stadium (Phase 1A), construction of the county headquarters offices and the construction of Tom Mboya Hospital.
EACC officers had earlier raided Natembeya’s home in Kitale, prompting ridicule from DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused the government stating that they will not allow harassment of the opposition and weaponising the justice system.
Kalonzo said the same harassment is subjected to opposition members, among them Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua and Mumias East MP, Peter Salasya.
