At least ten passengers on-board Chania Executive bus on Sunday morning narrowly escaped death after the vehicle partially plunged into the Indian Ocean, causing panic among the few passengers on board.
The Chania Executive bus was heading to Ukunda, South Coast and it had already off-boarded the vessel before the driver failed to control the vehicle and it plunged in the Indian Ocean.
It overturned right at the Likoni mainland operational area, blocking two ferries from docking at the operational area, further causing snarl-up on bothe sides, the Island and the mainland South.
“No casualties were reported during the accident, however, nine passengers onboard were rescued from the vehicle that had overturned at the Likoni mainland ramp,” said Kenya Ferry Company officials.
Rescue operations were spearhead by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) team, The Kenya Ferry Services, Kenya police and humanitarian body the Kenya Red Cross Society.
Seven passengers who sustained slight injuries were treated by the KRCS volunteers, while three of them were referred to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for further medical attention.
The accident disrupted normal operations at the busy Likoni ferry crossing channel.
Likoni ferry channel has witnessed similar incidents in the past, however, the situation has over the years been managed by the KFS, which is now under the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
