
The body of a man who was buried under the 11-storey building recently demolished in Mombasa has been found.
According to authorities, the body of Yusuf Ali Abdi, was found under the rubbles few days after the controlled demolition of the house in Kilifi area, within Mombasa County.
It is reported that Abdi had purchased an apartment at the third floor of of 11-storey building, and that he had gone to check his apartment about four minutes before the building was reduced to rubbles.
Abdi was trapped underneath and efforts to retrieve his body have been ongoing for almost a week now.
“We want to sadly confirm that the remains of our brother Yusuf Ali Abdi have been found and the family informed. We will fully support the family during this difficult time,” said Nassir.
Abdi had gone missing since April 2, 2025 according to his family members who have been searching for him since them.
The late Abdi was later buried at the Kikowani Muslim cemetery within Mombasa Island on Sunday, under the Islamic rituals.
Nassir however, defended the multi-agency team saying it operated within the law and limits.
“The public was well informed and the demolition was conducted in a well planned manner. Going forward we will engage all the investors and contractors on the new by-laws we will add to the already existing county safety guidelines so that we avert any crisis that may be triggered by reckless construction works,” said Nassir.
The planned demolition affected normal operations at the Coast Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH), where patients were quickly transferred to the Portreitz Subcounty hospital in Changamwe, including patients in ICU.
Locals were urged to maintain a distance of 1.2 kilometre radius to avert any calamities.
The demolition of the building constructed by former Legislature Irshad Sumra was brought down by KDF team.
Normalcy has since returned at the largest Coast referral hospital.
