The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has announced a 30-day suspension of all gambling-related advertisements across media platforms in Kenya.

In a statement released by BCLB Chairperson Jane Makau, the board expressed concern over the growing trend of gambling promoters misrepresenting betting as a legitimate investment opportunity and a quick route to wealth creation. Makau warned that such portrayals are leading to serious socioeconomic consequences, with far-reaching impacts on individuals, families, and the wider community.

“Of particular concern is the widespread broadcasting of gambling advertisements during the watershed period, between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., which exposes vulnerable groups—especially minors—to gambling-related addiction,” Makau stated.

The directive applies to all licensed gambling operators and covers a wide range of advertising channels, including television, radio, social media platforms, print media (such as newspapers, magazines, and flyers), and outdoor advertising (such as billboards and branded vehicles).

Additionally, the suspension encompasses digital marketing methods such as SMS, email campaigns, push notifications, celebrity endorsements, and influencer marketing.

Makau clarified that the ban covers all forms of gambling activities, including betting, gaming, lottery prize competitions, and related promotional campaigns. During the suspension period, all advertisements must be submitted to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for approval.

Operators have also been instructed to ensure full compliance with all relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks governing gambling and its advertisement in Kenya.

Furthermore, the BCLB requires gambling firms to implement comprehensive measures that promote responsible gambling practices that are in line with the terms of their licensing and operational conditions.
