A great number of artists who performed during the 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru park in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, are regretting the dire consequences.
The celebrations which were graced by President William Ruto saw artists who roared in the 90s and the 2000 among them Gospel artist Esther Wahome of the Kuna dawa fame, Charles Njagua Kanyi famously known as Jaguar, Owen Mwatia well known as Daddy Owen entertaining the gathering.
However, their bowing down to President Ruto angered the Gen-Z who acted swiftly and started kuwasalimia (verbally insulting them).
Admitting that the ground was hot for him even before his performance before president Ruto, Daddy Owen of the System ya kapungala fame revealed that he received back to back calls from the Gen-Z forcing him to put aside his form to concentrate on the performance.
“As if that was not enough, over 100 Gen-Z sent me one shilling each on M-Pesa just to be sure that it was my real number and immediately my phone was buzzing following endless calls sending me into panic,” said the songwriter known for his Mwokozi and Mbona compositions.
“So many were shocked how come nilikubali kuenda kuperform.Nilianza kupokea simu before going on stage…The first 10 calls ilikuwa matusi, matusi, matusi! At some point I had to leave my phone down,” Daddy Owen posted on his social media handles.
He apologised to the Gen-Z saying his Jamhuri Day celebration actions were highly regretted and will not happen again.
Daddy Owen reported that he had lost over 6000 followers on his YouTube channel, saying such numbers were huge and recovering them remains an uphill task.
Another artist, Major Nameye Khadija, famously known as Mejja also shared his frustrations after he was also ‘greeted’ by the Gen-Z.
Mejja also known as Mtoto wa Khadija and the Siskii hit song maker, said he will never grace such national events and entertain the gathering.
Among the big names who graced the national Jamhuri Day celebrations were rapper Brian Ouko Omollo well known as Caligraph Jones.
The Gen-Z have been criticising Rutos government and condemning him for killing the Gen-Z during the June and July nationwide Gen-Z protests.
