Five people died while two others sustained multiple injuries after they were involved in a grisly road accident at Msambweni, Kwale county.

The Sunday night accident that involved a tuktuk and a canter occurred along the Milalani-Shimba hills road.

According to Msambweni Police Commander, Ahmed Hillo, the lorry was heading to Kikoneni from Gonjora, Ukunda while the tuktuk on the opposite direction, the two engaged in a head-on collision.

“The tuktuk was ferrying a total of seven passengers which is already a flout of the traffic rules and road safety measures,” said Mr Hillo.

Angry locals threatened to set fire the lorry which prompted the driver to flee the accident scene.

“We have launched investigations concerning the cause of the accident. However, overloading and over speeding have been singled out as major causes of accidents in our highways,” he added.

The five bodies have been taken to the Msambweni County referral hospital morgue in Msambweni, Kwale county while the two survivors with multiple injuries are receiving urgent treatment at the same health facility.

Mr Hillo is urging motorists to exercise caution and always observe traffic rules and road safety whenever on the road.
